Wangi Wangi - 2009

An overcast Wangi Oval welcomed competitors as they arrived to the start of the second Great Adventure Challenge. This didn't dampen spirits as teams excitedly prepared maps and allocated legs to their team members. Rumors were rife about what the Team Challenge involved that would kick off the start of the event. All they knew was that it would be a shocking experience. Shocking it was as teams had to cross an electric fence using the poles and ropes provided. Many a yelp could be heard as teams came in contact with the electrified fence!

OAMPS secured an early lead by showing great teamwork and getting all of its six team members over the fence before many of the teams had one across. In all the excitement, OAMPS took the scenic route on their way to TA1 which meant they were the last team to arrive. TA1 saw teams transition from a short run through the back streets of Wangi Wangi to kayak across Lake Maquarie. Nature's Way were the first to transition from Kayak to Mountain Bike. The bike leg took teams to the base of the Watagans where they were to be challenged with a Rogaine (cross country navigation).

Austar and Nature's Way arrived together at the start of the Rogaine. Teams needed to collect 120 points out of a possible 190. Ernst & Young decided that was all too easy and collected every checkpoint (190 points). Austar proved their navigation prowess by collecting the required points and transitioning back onto the bikes first. CH2MHILL was hot on their heels only 7 minutes behind.

By the time the bikes had reached the next TA Austar still maintained their lead however Foxtel was now in hot pursuit having overtaken CH2MHILL on the bike leg. 14 minutes separated the two pay TV teams. Foxtel scenting the prey was within reach shot off after them.

Support crews waited anxiously at the finish to see if Foxtel had overtaken Austar on the Coasteer. A team was spotted in the distance, it was Foxtel. Would they keep the trophy? Then Austar was spotted coming from a different direction. Then both teams spotted each other and it was a sprint for the finish. Austar cross the line first to claim line honors. Foxtel crossed the line only three seconds later! As both teams had raised a similar amount of money, the time bonuses were cancelled out. Austar are the winners of the second Great Adventure Challenge!

Royal National Park - 2008

Perfect weather conditions greeted teams as they battled it out at the Royal National Park for the inaugural Starlight Great Adventure Challenge Trophy. The event was dominated by Team OAMPS who arrived at every transition in first place. They crossed the line nearly an hour ahead of the other teams. Unfortunately they missed a couple of checkpoints enroute incurring an hours time penalty. Teams OAMPS waited anxiously by the finish line waiting to see if another team would finish within an hour of their time. Fifty seven minutes behind Team OAMPS, Team Foxtel ran out of the bush to claim victory with only three minutes to spare!

A special mention must go to Team Uncle Toby's who completed the course using the same four team members for every leg. A remarkable achievement!

The event raised over $50,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The money raised will be used to brighten the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children and their families.
